How Do TikTok and Douyin Data Differ? Access Routes and APIs Compared
TikTok and Douyin both belong to ByteDance, but according to TikTok they are different products run by different corporate entities in different regions. Research, monitoring and data teams should handle them as two separate data sources. This guide covers how the two relate, the official and third-party data access routes for each, and the limits to check when analyzing both.
Quick Answer: Can TikTok and Douyin Be Treated as One Dataset?
No. According to TikTok, Douyin and TikTok are different products: Douyin is offered only through mainland China app stores, and TikTok is offered and operated only outside mainland China. Sharing a parent company does not mean their accounts or content correspond. Access routes differ too: TikTok offers research tools to eligible non-commercial researchers, while Douyin has an open platform built mainly for developer apps. Query and sample each platform separately; search results on one do not tell you whether a discussion exists on the other.
Who this is for
- Research, OSINT and social listening teams that need to track both platforms
- Data engineering and product teams evaluating short-video data sources
- Brand and market research teams comparing content trends in mainland China and other markets
If You Need the Data
- Douyin: LargitData's Social Media Data API collects public content by web crawler and provides keyword video search, video comments and public account timelines. It is a third-party data service, not Douyin's official API. Douyin API reference
- TikTok: monitor public content in the InfoMiner platform, with real-time alerts and analysis reports. What is InfoMiner?
How Are They Related? One Company, Two Platforms
Douyin launched in mainland China in September 2016, and ByteDance then launched TikTok for overseas markets in 2017. ByteDance acquired Musical.ly in November 2017 and merged it into TikTok in August 2018, moving its existing accounts and content over.
TikTok states that Douyin and TikTok are different products, each with its own platform code and management team, run by different corporate entities in different regions. Douyin can be downloaded only from mainland China app stores, and TikTok is offered only outside mainland China. For data purposes, treat them as two independent sources and verify accounts, content and coverage on each.

What Are the Routes to TikTok Data?
Research API and VCE: For Non-Commercial Researchers
According to TikTok's developer site (checked in October 2026), Research Tools (including the Research API and the Virtual Compute Environment, VCE) are open to academic institutions in the US, the EEA, the UK, Canada and Switzerland, and to not-for-profit or independent research bodies in the EU. Academic and not-for-profit organizations in Brazil can also apply if they study online youth safety. Applicants must be independent of commercial interests; creators, advertisers and commercial users are not eligible, and access is granted per research project after review. Applicants must also be located in an eligible region and meet the other conditions TikTok lists.
The data covers public videos, video comments, an individual user's public profile, and follower and following lists. Under the official Codebook, data is limited to public accounts of users aged 18 and over, and following lists must also have been made public. The official FAQ lists a general Research API quota of 1,000 requests a day for up to 100,000 records; follower and following lists have a separate quota of 20,000 requests a day for up to 2,000,000 records. Both reset daily at 00:00 UTC. New videos can take up to 48 hours to become searchable, and statistics such as view and follower counts can take up to 10 days to update. Eligible, approved non-academic not-for-profit organizations may get limited access through the VCE; being eligible does not guarantee API access.
Other Official Interfaces: Each With a Limited Purpose
The Display API lets a third-party app show an authorizing user's own profile and videos; it cannot search other accounts' content. The Commercial Content API searches ads and other commercial content by advertiser name or keyword and returns advertiser and ad-delivery information. Its product page currently lists data from EU countries only, while applicants may be based anywhere. Its scope is the commercial content library, not all public TikTok videos.
EU DSA Researcher Data Access
Under Article 40(4) of the EU Digital Services Act, very large online platforms and search engines must give vetted researchers access to data following a reasoned request from the Digital Services Coordinator of establishment, for research into systemic risks in the EU. In July 2025 the European Commission adopted a delegated regulation (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2025/2050) that sets the procedure for vetted researchers to access non-public data and creates a data access portal for applications and information exchange; it entered into force on 29 October 2025. This route is for eligible researchers studying systemic risks in the EU, not a data source for ordinary commercial monitoring.
Third-Party Social Listening Tools and Data Services
Commercial teams can evaluate social listening platforms or data services that monitor public TikTok content. Check coverage, update frequency and available fields, and test with the accounts and keywords you actually care about.
What Are the Routes to Douyin Data?
Douyin Open Platform: Check Authorization and Activation by Endpoint
The Douyin Open Platform provides capabilities for profiles, content, search, private messages, local services and mini programs. Authorization varies by endpoint: some need a user-authorized access_token, while others are called with an app-level client_token, including the official Douyin video search. Activation and review requirements vary by capability, and what is available depends on the app's eligibility and each endpoint's rules. It does not imply unrestricted collection of public content.
Collecting It Yourself: Assess Access and Maintenance First
Before collecting data yourself, assess the available access methods, account and verification requirements, data availability, and the maintenance needed when the platform changes its pages or interfaces.
Third-Party Data Services
Third-party data services are another route to Douyin public content, delivered as structured fields that feed your own analysis. When evaluating one, check the collection method, available fields, comment depth, historical backfill and update frequency.
Points Often Misunderstood
- Verify data separately on each platform: They are different products, so verify and collect accounts and content on each; do not treat them as one dataset.
- Search results on one platform say nothing about the other: Search results and discussions may differ between the platforms. Search each separately; results on one do not show that relevant content is absent from the other.
- The Research API is not for commercial monitoring: The Research API is for non-commercial research only; creators, advertisers and commercial users are not eligible.
- Check comparability before comparing engagement across platforms: Before comparing views and likes, check metric definitions, sampling coverage and measurement times. If they are not aligned, report changes within each platform separately.
What to Watch When Analyzing Both Platforms
First, sample separately. Design a keyword list for each target market and its actual usage, including Simplified and Traditional Chinese forms and common aliases where relevant.
Second, consider availability. Content may be deleted or made private and may no longer be accessible later. To follow an event, collect continuously while it unfolds and keep the collection time and source URL.
Third, distinguish video content from comments. Views can be expressed through speech, captions, visuals, titles, descriptions or comments. State which data your analysis actually covers, and do not treat the comments you collected as the views of all viewers.
Fourth, settle the use case and the legal review first. Public content is not free to collect and reuse at will. Platform terms, copyright and the handling of personal data should be assessed by legal or compliance staff for your use case and jurisdiction.
