China Company Data API and Due Diligence Reports: Data Scope, Delivery and a Buyer's Checklist
LargitData supplies Chinese company data from official public sources and licensed third-party data providers, covering four areas: business registration and shareholders, ownership tracing and actual controllers (inferred from registered shareholding), litigation and court enforcement records, including dishonest-debtor listings, and administrative penalties and abnormal-operation listings. It can be delivered by API, as a due diligence report or as a batch file. This page explains what data is available, when each delivery method fits, what to confirm before buying Chinese company data from any provider, and where the service stops.
Quick answer: what should you confirm before buying a China company data API or due diligence report?
Confirm four things before buying Chinese company data. First, the data categories: usually business registration and shareholders, ownership tracing and actual controllers, litigation and court enforcement records, including dishonest-debtor listings, and administrative penalties and abnormal-operation listings. Second, the source: whether each category comes from official public sources or licensed data, and whether the provider can explain it. Third, the matching key: whether companies are identified by the Unified Social Credit Code, and how the Chinese registered entity is found when you only have an English name. Fourth, delivery: an API to plug into your systems, a due diligence report for case-by-case review, or batch files for large lists. Note also that beneficial owner filings in China are not open to the public, so actual controllers can only be inferred from public disclosures and registered shareholders, and whether personal information and cross-border transfer comply with applicable law is for the buyer's legal team to assess.
Who it is for
- Banks and financial institutions: onboarding and periodic review of Chinese corporate clients and counterparties
- Procurement and supply chain teams: onboarding checks and annual reviews of Chinese suppliers
- Investment and M&A teams: checking a target's registration, ownership and litigation before a deal
- Compliance and risk teams: connecting checks on Chinese counterparties to existing review systems
What Chinese company data is available
The table below lists what the four data categories commonly contain, the official public sources available for checking them and the limits to keep in mind. It is not a list of guaranteed fields; the fields and service scope actually available are confirmed case by case, depending on the companies to be checked and your needs.
| Data category | Typical content | Official public sources for checking | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business registration and shareholders | Unified Social Credit Code, registration status, legal representative, registered capital, business scope, shareholders and capital contributions, key personnel, change history | National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System | The shareholder field lists registered (nominal) shareholders; annual reports are self-reported by the company |
| Ownership tracing and actual controller | Registered shareholders and contributions at each layer, related companies, and the actual controller as inferred from registration data | No single public source; compiled from registration data at each layer and from public disclosures | An inference, not beneficial owner filing data; capital contribution does not equal control; offshore layers must be checked separately |
| Litigation and dishonesty records | Enforcement information such as judgment debtors, dishonest judgment debtors and consumption restrictions, plus court judgments where available | China Enforcement Information Public Website, China Judgements Online | Published judgments anonymize party names, and not every judgment is published; no record found means only that nothing was found in that source |
| Administrative penalties and abnormal operations | List of enterprises with abnormal operations, list of seriously illegal and dishonest entities, administrative penalty disclosures | National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System, Credit China website, disclosures by the relevant regulators | Penalty disclosures are spread across different regulators; once a company is removed from the abnormal-operations list, the listing is no longer published |

How to choose among the three delivery methods
Start with two questions: how many companies you need to check a year, and whether the results go straight to a reviewer or are first organized by a system and then reviewed by staff.
| Delivery method | Best for | What you receive |
|---|---|---|
| API | Workflows that look companies up from inside your own systems, such as client or supplier onboarding | Query by company identifiers and receive structured data that feeds your existing review or risk systems |
| Due diligence report | High-value or high-risk cases, or cases that need a written record | The four data categories and the ownership structure, organized for reviewers to read and file |
| Batch data | Screening and periodic re-review of large counterparty lists | Data on many companies delivered at once from your list, ready to load into a data warehouse or review workflow |
Common use cases
Corporate client review at financial institutions
When a bank takes on a Chinese corporate client or handles business involving a Chinese counterparty, it needs to check registration details, ownership and adverse records. When these checks are built into the review workflow, require that every lookup keeps its data date and source, which makes later reviews and audits easier.
Supplier onboarding and annual review
When onboarding a Chinese supplier, procurement can first check whether the company remains registered as active and whether it appears on the abnormal-operations list or as a dishonest judgment debtor. After onboarding, batch re-reviews can track changes in registration status, shareholders and adverse records.
Preliminary checks before investment or M&A
Early in a deal, an investment team can map the target's registered ownership structure and related companies as leads on who controls it, then decide whether to commission advisers for deeper due diligence.
A checklist before buying Chinese company data
Whichever provider you choose, we recommend confirming the following before signing, and writing it into the contract or service description.
- Source documentation: which official public sources or licensed data each category comes from, and whether the provider can explain this category by category.
- Matching key: whether every record is keyed to the Unified Social Credit Code rather than matched on company name alone.
- Name matching: how the Chinese registered entity is found when you only have an English name or an abbreviation, and whether the matching evidence is provided.
- Data dates: whether each record shows the source data date or the lookup date, so you can tell when it needs rechecking.
- Labelled inferences: whether actual controller and ownership-tracing results are marked as inferred from registration data, with the inference path listed.
- How no-results are stated: whether a missing record is reported as not found in that source, rather than as no record existing.
- Usage rights: whether the data can be stored in your own systems, for how long, and whether it can be shared with other group entities or third parties.
- Personal information and cross-border transfer: names of legal representatives and individual shareholders are personal information, and whether cross-border delivery and retention comply with applicable law should be assessed by your legal team.
Regulatory and compliance considerations
Even when Chinese company data is public, two areas of regulation still apply to its use. How they apply in a specific case is for the buyer's legal team or outside counsel to decide.
The first is personal information. The names and positions of legal representatives, individual shareholders, directors, supervisors and senior managers remain personal information even after public disclosure. China's Personal Information Protection Law took effect on November 1, 2021, and it limits the processing of personal information that has already been made public to a reasonable scope; whether data protection law in the buyer's own jurisdiction also applies needs to be confirmed as well.
The second is cross-border transfer. The Measures for the Security Assessment of Outbound Data Transfers took effect on September 1, 2022, and on March 22, 2024 the Cyberspace Administration of China issued the Provisions on Promoting and Regulating Cross-Border Data Flows, effective the same day, which adjusted when they apply. If data is processed by an entity in mainland China and then provided abroad, these rules may be relevant.
Service boundaries
- Data comes only from official public sources and licensed third-party data providers. We do not carry out on-site investigations or obtain non-public information.
- Beneficial owner filings are not open to the public, so the actual controllers we provide are inferred from public disclosures and registered shareholders.
- The output is a set of due diligence leads, not a credit rating or legal advice. Final decisions rest with the buyer's risk and compliance staff.
How to get started
- Describe your needs: how many companies you expect to check, which data categories you need and your preferred delivery method.
- Confirm the deliverable scope: based on your needs, we confirm the fields and delivery format we can provide.
- Start delivery: data is delivered by API, due diligence report or batch file within the agreed scope.
